RICHARDSON, TEXAS — Voters in Richardson will head to the polls starting Tuesday, April 22, as early voting begins for the city’s pivotal May 3 municipal and school board elections.
With a packed ballot featuring contested mayoral and school board races, this election season is expected to draw strong civic engagement across both Collin and Dallas counties.
Key Races to Watch
At the top of the municipal ticket, Mayor Bob Dubey is seeking another term, but faces stiff competition from two challengers: former council member Amir Omar and political newcomer Alan C. North. The three-way race could reshape the city’s leadership landscape.
Place 6 on the Richardson City Council is also up for grabs. Incumbent Arefin Shamsul, who has served since June 2021, will defend his seat against challenger Lisa Kupfer. Meanwhile, the remaining council members—Curtis Dorian, Jennifer Justice, Dan Barrios, Joe Corcoran, and Ken Hutchenrider—are running unopposed.
The City Council officially called the election during its February 10 meeting, authorizing contracts with both Collin and Dallas counties to coordinate election logistics.
School Board Elections Draw Interest
Education policy is also on the ballot, as several Richardson ISD Board of Trustees positions are being contested. In District 2, incumbent Vanessa Pacheco is facing two challengers—Elaine Bonavita and Pamela Hughes—in what is shaping up to be a competitive three-way race. Over in District 5, board member Rachel McGowen will square off against Christina Angelina Neria.
District 4’s Regina Harris is running unopposed.
Residents in the Plano ISD portion of Richardson will also have decisions to make. While Place 1 board member Lauren Tyra is running without opposition, Place 2 will be a two-person race between Sam Johnson and Xiomar Pierre after incumbent Angela Powell opted not to seek re-election.
In Place 3, longtime board president Nancy Humphrey is being challenged by Harper Weaver. Meanwhile, a three-way battle has emerged in Place 6, where Elisa Klein, Andrew Rettke, and Dash Weerasinghe are all vying for the seat vacated by Jeri Chambers.
