Halal Bros: Serving Up Street Food With Soul in the Heart of Austin

In a city celebrated for its vibrant food scene, one name stands out when it comes to halal street eats — Halal Bros. What began as a modest food truck in 2010 has grown into a beloved Austin institution, bringing the bold flavors of New York-style halal food to the heart of Texas.

A Family Dream Born in Austin

Halal Bros was founded by four Palestinian-American brothers — Ahmad, Mohamad, Salee, and Mahmoud Attal — who moved from New York to Austin with a dream to share the food they grew up loving. Inspired by the famous halal carts of NYC, they saw a gap in Austin’s food scene and filled it with sizzling shawarma, fragrant basmati rice, and their now-famous white and red sauces.

Their first food truck drew long lines of students, professionals, and late-night food lovers, all eager for a taste of something new yet familiar. It wasn’t long before the business expanded into brick-and-mortar restaurants.

Flavor-Packed Menu Favorites

At the core of Halal Bros’ success is a simple but powerful combination: quality halal ingredients, bold spices, and generous portions. Their menu includes:

  • Chicken, beef, and lamb shawarma over rice
  • Falafel wraps and plates
  • Fresh sides like hummus, tabbouleh, dolma, and fries
  • Signature white garlic and spicy red sauces that fans swear by

All meat is certified zabiha halal, making it a go-to spot for Austin’s Muslim community — but its appeal is far broader, winning over food lovers from all backgrounds.

Overcoming Challenges and Growing Stronger

In April 2021, the West Campus location suffered a major fire, temporarily forcing them to shut down. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the brothers used the setback as motivation to rebuild. By March 2022, Halal Bros reopened — stronger and more determined than ever to serve their loyal fanbase.

Since then, they’ve continued to expand, opening new locations throughout Austin, including South Lamar, Anderson Mill, Braker Lane, and most recently, a new branch in Round Rock (2024).

A Community Staple With Heart

More than just a food stop, Halal Bros has become a part of the cultural fabric of Austin. Whether it’s through late-night eats for hungry UT students or family dinners after Friday prayers, the restaurant blends food, faith, and community into a delicious experience.

Their commitment to authenticity, customer service, and inclusivity reflects the values many in the Muslim community hold dear — and their continued success proves that halal food isn’t just for Muslims, but for everyone who appreciates good food with soul.
