Kafi BBQ (Irving, TX): Texas Barbecue Gets a Halal Twist

Texas is world-famous for its smoked meats and bold barbecue culture — but one restaurant in Irving, TX is taking things to the next level. Kafi BBQ, opened in late 2024, is the first and only halal-certified Wagyu barbecue spot in the Dallas-Fort Worth area — and it’s turning heads with its unique fusion of Texas smoke, Middle Eastern soul, and premium ingredients.

From Silicon Valley to Smoker Pits

Kafi BBQ is the brainchild of Salahodeen Abdul-Kafi, a former software engineer with roots in Silicon Valley. He helped build video editing tools at YouTube before trading code for coals. Motivated by a passion for food and a lack of upscale halal barbecue options, Abdul-Kafi spent five years fine-tuning his recipes before launching his dream spot in Irving.

His journey is anything but ordinary — but it’s proof that great barbecue is a science, an art, and a cultural bridge.

Wagyu Done Right — and Halal

One of Kafi BBQ’s biggest draws is its 100% halal-certified Wagyu beef. The restaurant sources:

  • American Wagyu from Wagyu X Ranch in Itasca, TX
  • Grass-fed New Zealand Wagyu, known for its flavor and marbling

This is not your typical brisket. It’s tender, rich, and slow-smoked to perfection using traditional wood-burning pits. Kafi BBQ doesn’t just accommodate halal eaters — it elevates their options.

Signature Dishes You Can’t Miss

What sets Kafi BBQ apart isn’t just the halal label — it’s the thoughtful flavor. The menu combines Texas BBQ traditions with Middle Eastern influences:

  • Wagyu Brisket: Smoky, tender, and richly marbled
  • Iraqi Sausage (Makanek-style): Based on a family recipe using citrus and sumac
  • Rib Plate with Wagyu Fries: Hand-cut and fried in Wagyu beef tallow
  • Basbousa Cake and Cardamom Banana Pudding: A sweet finish with heritage

Sides like house-made mac and cheese, jalapeño cornbread, and citrusy cabbage slaw complement the mains beautifully.

A Cultural Culinary Experience

Kafi BBQ isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a celebration of identity. Abdul-Kafi describes it as a “third space” where Muslim families, BBQ lovers, and foodies from all backgrounds can gather, eat, and connect.

And the vibe reflects that — from Arabic music in the background to casual, Texas-style picnic tables, it’s welcoming, warm, and flavorful in every sense.
