Commitment to Public Service

Elected in June 2021, Arefin Shamsul represents Richardson in the at-large Place 6 on City Council. His dedication to community service extends beyond his tenure on the Council, as he has been actively involved in numerous volunteer roles for over a decade. His leadership in local governance reflects his commitment to making Richardson a thriving and inclusive city.

A History of Community Involvement

Before joining the City Council, Shamsul served nearly ten years on the Richardson Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Building and Standards Commission. His civic engagement also includes participation in the Richardson Complete Count Committee for the 2020 Census, the RISD Bond Steering Committee, and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. He has also contributed to his local neighborhood as a board member of the Highland Terrace Neighborhood Association.

A graduate of Leadership Richardson Class XXV and the Richardson Citizens Police Academy, Class 41, Shamsul has demonstrated a strong commitment to civic education and leadership development.

Engineering a Better Future

With over 30 years of experience as a professional civil engineer, Shamsul owns and operates a civil engineering consulting firm specializing in municipal infrastructure. His expertise in engineering and infrastructure development has allowed him to bring valuable insight into city planning and development initiatives in Richardson.

Shamsul holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. His technical knowledge and leadership skills have been instrumental in advancing infrastructure projects that benefit Richardson’s residents.

Personal Life and Legacy

Shamsul has lived in Richardson for over 15 years with his wife, to whom he has been married for more than 27 years. Together, they have a son and three daughters. His dedication to public service and professional excellence continues to make a lasting impact on the Richardson community, ensuring a better future for all who call the city home.
